Fleur’t Boutique’s 3rd Annual Spring into Summer Fashion Show at the Valley Ho with hair by Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy was a nostalgic, retro remix of neon, spandex and ultimate 80’s funk. This trip down memory lane inspired the fashion conscience to combine wardrobes and transform runway looks into wearable trends that won’t break the bank.
Anjuli Morse, Director of Operations/Creative Director for Fleur’t Boutique, got the overall theme of “everything old is new again” from the rampant retro 80’s style that has carried over into spring and summer collections, as well as the return of funky Ray-Ban eye-wear. Fleur’t showed examples of combining neons with more subdued basics, such as florescent pink, zipper leggings with a white, off the shoulder peasant top. Morse is a fan of neons because “it adds a great summery vibe to just about anything; you can take more wintery pieces and layer them with neon and you have a brand new outfit! Also, with the economy being as it is, we can all use great ways to reuse our favorite pieces!”
Some of the other trends indicative of the 80’s included coordinating bright colors, such as lime green and neon pink, satin mini dresses and jumpers, metal chains on dresses, fringed scarfs, and distressed daisy dukes (yes, they’re back!). Liquid, wet-look leggings and skirts haven’t gone anywhere, and swimwear diverted with brights, metallics, graffiti art, peace signs, stars, and an abundance of sparkle and gems, influenced by the upcoming jewel trend that will be the signature of the fall season. Numerous women’s designers were incorporated into the show, such as Naven, Boulee, LNA, Shabby Socialite Swim, CC Skye, Vivienne Westwood, Frenzii, Monarchy, William Rast, Members Only, Rebel Yell, and Sheri Bodell.
Men’s looks were military inspired with camo shorts, vests and cardigans with an edge. The bright trend was expressed through nylon jackets and the comeback of the mesh, trucker hat. Hoodies were decked out with fur mohawks and rhinestones, and large belt buckles sparkled with tenacity. Men’s designers included Fred Perry, Rowdy, Aqua VI, Dehoghton, Stitch’s, and Monarchy.
Morse says that as far as upcoming fall trends go, hot, saturated colors will stay, as well as layering, vests, and metallics. The big focus for new collections are very tailored, fitted pieces for both men and women.
Prints such as plaid, houndstooth, checks, and tweeds will also be huge.
The continuation of the 80’s revival has adapted to economic times, being more accepting of mixing and matching from past seasons, while the bright color trend indicates a positive outlook.
