Celebrating Woodstock, an all-day trunk show during the Grand Avenue Festival was exactly what you would expect from the cooperative Grand Avenue art scene. Artists and neighbors towards the western end of the corridor came together to create a bazaar of original silver smithed jewelry, polished indigenous stones, glass pendants, hand-painted Batik and Shibori silks, and other niche accessory items. Professionals demonstrated lapidary, glass fusing, and master bladesmithing techniques for passers by.
The merchant’s individual wares all came together towards the end of the day in an intimate fashion show featuring select pieces. Eager artists and adoring spectators gathered in the Soul Invictus Theatre to see “art in motion,” as Gloria Marsiglia, fashion show organizer, and owner and jewelry designer of Gallery Marsiglia, put it.
“The avenue is eclectic and that came through in the fashion show,” she commented. “Everything was one-of-kind, and personally hand crafted by the artists.”
The fashion show coined, The Boho Haute Hippie Movement, was certainly eclectic, featuring contemporary eveningwear by Mirza Pena, handed painted Batik and Shibori designs by Chris Kane, and tie-dye by Wicked Wear and Tie-Dye Mary. Looks ranged from hippie to edgy, glamorous to ethereal, and each of the 10 models owned their outfits from the accessories that adorned their hair to the dress they wore, showing that a women of all style pallets could incorporate the imaginative jewelry and hair accessories.
Hair and make-up was styled by the always avant-garde Toni&Guy professionals, and model’s hair featured original designs by Sage & Sage, which ranged from bejeweled butterflies, wild feathers, and blooming flower pins. The show’s jewelry pieces, donated by Gloria Marsiglia, Adele Blakey, and Chris Larson, ranged from subdued to dramatic, finishing off each look.
