Blow Collection returns to Scottsdale with “LA Fashion Arizona Style”, a tribute to Michael Jackson. Darryl Threatt, owner and designer, was inspired by the pop king’s influential look and combines this individuality with his urban couture line.
It was reminiscent of the 80’s retro era: Plastic neon sunglasses, leggings, suspenders, velcro shoes, and distressed denim – remnants of a bygone decade marked by decadence and hedonism. Accented with black clothing accompanying white shoes and red converse, Threatt incorporated splashes of color as a catalyst to alter times of economic distress to a decade when extravagance and self indulgence ruled.
Candy Coated Swimwear, a collection also showcased in this 80’s dance party, is all about summertime fun with bright, flirtatious colors and prints adorning the monokini trend.
Rachel B. accessories garnished the upscale, city look with “cuffletts”, her signature design of clutch purses with handcuffs, in undaunted gold, white, pink, and purple summer colors.
Threatt anticipates the trend of layering for fall, as well as pastel colors to encourage peaceful ambiance. Rachel B. says regarding accessories, less is more; they become a part of the model rather than standing out.
Hair by Toni & Guy took on a borderline avant-garde approach with over exaggeration of gold bobby pins resembling train track patterns. Undercuts and shaven sides represented the fearless audacity of 80’s pop culture androgyny.
Whitney Lounsbury, make-up artist for Toni & Guy, created an urban club look with dramatic, smoky eyes and a pop of color to parallel 80’s glam. Lips were also a focus with a matte, stained look using brick reds. Lounsbury predicts the upcoming season to include off-shade, highly pigmented accent colors such as olive green and grape purple, alongside dewy, flawless skin.
Fashion has always been an international language used to communicate diversity and articulate emotion, reminding us that tragedy sparks the beginning of a positive outlook. In current times plagued by an economic recession, escapism by way of 80’s glam reminds us that the threshold for unabashed sensuality isn’t far behind.
